With over 31 years of law enforcement experience, Tiburon Police Department Captain Michelle Jean has been appointed Tiburon’s next Chief of Police.
Captain Jean’s appointment follows Chief Ryan Monaghan’s announcement he will be leaving his position with the Town of Tiburon effective February 3, 2023, to take the position of Assistant Sheriff with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. Chief Monaghan said, “I will miss working with the dedicated professionals of the Tiburon Police Department and the entire Town organization as well as the very supportive Tiburon community members. I am confident Captain Jean will build on our efforts to enhance community engagement, transparency, and public safety”.
Captain Jean joined Tiburon PD last year after a thorough and competitive nationwide recruitment for the captain position. Beginning her career with the San Francisco Police Department as a Patrol Officer, Michelle steadily rose through the ranks of Sergeant and Lieutenant, finishing her career with SFPD as Captain of the Richmond District Station. This diverse district includes over 95,000 residents, a mix of residential and commercial areas, several embassies and consulates as well as various high profile tourist attractions.
Captain Jean said, “I take pride in the opportunity to serve as the next Chief of Police for the Tiburon Police Department. I would like to thank Town Manager, Greg Chanis, and the council members for the confidence they have in my ability to lead and develop this department. I assure the community the department will be transparent, accountable, and responsible to your concerns and needs. I will remain focused on current policing challenges, and am committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the department as well as in the way we serve the community.”
Captain Jean was responsible for all aspects of the daily operations in the Richmond District, including providing leadership to approximately 100 sworn and non-sworn employees. In addition, she was very active in expanding and managing partnerships with a variety of community organizations including the Richmond Station Community Police Advisory Board and numerous merchant and neighborhood associations.
Town Manager Chanis said, “I am honored to have the privilege of appointing Tiburon’s first female Police Chief. With her extensive law enforcement experience and demonstrated skill in community engagement, Michelle is ideally suited to lead the Tiburon Police Department. I look forward to supporting Michelle and her staff in continuing to provide exceptional police services to the Tiburon community.”
