Tips for Flying
- If you are travelling with loved ones, see if you can drive instead of fly. Driving together is the best way to reduce your footprint, however this is not true for solo travelers
- When booking look for newer model planes such as Boeing's 787 Dreamliner and the Airbus A350 which are two of the most fuel efficient models
- Using websites such as Google Flights and Lite Flights can help reduce your impact by showing the carbon emission estimates for different flights
- Your personal carbon footprint on a flight is determined by how much space you take up on a plane so flying economy can reduce your impact (larger seats can double your footprint!)
- Pack as light as you can, a heavier plane burns more fuel
- Take-off and landing is carbon intensive so look for direct flights
- Purchase carbon offsets for your travel and flying emissions
Take a Train
- Travelling in the U.S.? Check out Amtrack's Trip Planning Map to see if there is a train route that can get you to your destination. By taking a train you will also experience historic routes and can book a private room
- For international travel look at the new sleeper trains from Nightjet, SJ Euronights, and European Sleeper. You can also use Chronotrain's interactive map to see where you can travel to within five hours by train
- For even information on train travel, you can use Man in Seat 61 which can help organize almost any train trip in the world
Reduce Your Footprint Wherever You Can
- Look for accommodations that use renewable energy or have other sustainable features. Hotels that have transitioned can be found on the Responsible Travel Website
- Try to eat locally sourced and/or plant based food while at your destination
Support the Local Community
- Choose an independent, locally-owned hotel and check whether the hotel pays the minimum wage to all staff
- Use a responsible tour operator. Companies such as YellowWood Adventures and Much Better Adventures work to benefit the local economy
- Look for ways to give back while at your destination. The organization Journeys with Purpose host small groups to conduct conservation projects in locations across the globe
