Common Permits
The Building Division has compiled submittal checklists for common building permit applications. Review the checklists.
Permit Fees & Re-Evaluation Fees
The Town's building permit fee structure is largely based on the estimated valuation of a project. Details can be found in the Building Division Fee Schedule.
Separate fees may be charged by the fire, water, sanitary, and/or school districts, which are all different government entities. When you know the total valuation of your project, you may contact the Building Division for a fee estimate. Before the permit can be finaled, the Town will request a calculation of the actual cost of the project. Additional fees (or re-evaluation fees) will be collected if the actual project valuation was higher than the estimate upon which the original permit fee was based.
Recycling & Diversion of Construction and Demolition
The Town of Tiburon requires applicants seeking construction and/or demolition permits to track and divert a minimum of 90% of the discards created during the project. Diversion is achieved through recycling or reuse. All contractors and sub-contractors are responsible for the proper management of the C&D debris on the project site. This may involve separating recyclable materials from non-recyclable materials before hauling to a recycling or disposal facility in order to achieve 90% diversion. Visit Zero Waste Marin for more information.
Work Without Permits & Penalties
A Stop Work Order may be issued for any work requiring a building permit that was started without the necessary permits. For minor projects valued at less than $5,000, the penalty is $250, and increases to $1,000 plus 4x the permit fee for projects valued at more than $50,000.
If you have any questions about whether or not you need a permit, please contact the Building Division rather than risk a Stop Work Order and penalty fees.
Emergency Repairs
When equipment replacement and repairs must be performed in an emergency situation, the permit application must be submitted within the next working business day to the building official.
